reflection, celebration and giving thanks!

I find this Thanksgiving is different for me this year. I am reflecting fondly about what happened at this time last year. I was immensely pregnant and feeling so done being so. I was only 36 wks to the day when my water broke and the journey of my youngest coming began.

I have thoroughly have enjoyed this past year. So many milestones. My baby is the happiest baby I have ever taken care of. People always comment how easy going he is, how patiently he waits for me, being the 3rd I suppose he didn't have much choice but to be patient. lol

While celebrating his birthday, I am also celebrating so many personal milestones in regards to my baby. 1 full year without any disposable diapers used! So many people think this is hard to do but the reality of it is, it wasn't very hard at all. We just bring cloth when we are out and when we travel. My goal is to make to to potty learning without ever using a sposie diaper.

So to celebrate with my family we want to pass on something to our fans.... win a sweetpea one size pocket diaper!

Heres how to win... (be a Canadian resident) and post your entries below. One comment per entry per the following:

Raising Green Kids- Finding Secondhand Treasures

Reusing items is one of the best ways to keep them out of the trash. Buying good quality secondhand items is both green and economical. Follow these tips on your secondhand treasure hunts and you wont be disappointed.

Safety Issues: Make sure to be aware of product recalls. These can be found at manufacturer websites, and at the Consumer Product Safety Commission Potentially dangerous secondhand items include (but are not limited to) mattresses, cribs, car seats, strollers, playpens, baby gates, baby walkers. These items have changed greatly over the years and older versions may not meet current safety standards. Car seats can be especially dangerous if you do not know the history of the car seat. If a car seat has been involved in a vehicle collision it must be replaced, even if the child was not in the car at the time of the accident.

Great secondhand buys: clothing, newer non-electronic toys, books, movies and sturdy furniture. Clothing, especially baby clothing can be reused through several children before it wears out, as they grow so quickly that some outfits are only worn a handful of times. With 3 kids we buy 90% of our clothing from Value Village, a second hand thrift store that donates their profits to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Bargain Hunting Places: garage sales, swap sessions, friends, family, coworkers, newspaper classifieds, thrift and consignment stores, internet sites (such as ebay, craigslist, kijiji, freecycle).

Twice a year Moms and Bums sponsors a great Mom to Mom sale here in Brampton, Ontario. Admission proceeds go to Peel Children's Safety Village. The next one is coming up October 9th, 2010 from 9am-1pm at 1305 Williams Pkwy in Brampton, On inside Judith Nyman Secondary School (formerly known as North Peel Secondary) next to Terry Miller Rec Center. This sale features over 150 vendors.Visit the MomSale facebook page for more details!

The Lighter Side of Cloth Diapering

For many new parents, the terminology surrounding cloth diapering can be a wee bit confusing. Here at Huckleberry Baby Shop, we aim to help you navigate those early and sometimes confusing days, so let’s clear up some of the possibly confusing terminology. Hopefully you can hear the smile in my voice!

Weight Ranges: (such a 6-12 pounds) refer to the size of the baby wearing the diaper, not to the diaper’s capacity for “extra contents.”

All-in-One: Nope. One of these diapers will not hold all three of your triplets!

Shorties and Longies: For those of you parents of boys who look at this terminology with confusion while wondering which one to buy for you little guy, put your ruler away. Shorties and Longies refer to the leg length on wool or fleece covers.

Stripping: This is not an encouragement for parents of young babies to get naked and create new offspring, rather it refers to a process used to remove detergent residue from diapers.

Wipe: Although most commonly used by new parents as a term to describe their lack of sleep and state of mind, in the diapering world, wipes are used to clean a baby’s bottom.

Diaper Sprayer: Contrary to popular belief, this device works MUCH better if the diaper is removed from your baby before hosing it down!

Diaper Pail: This is not actually a reference to the ghastly white colour a new dad’s face turns when he changes the first few poopy bums.

Doubler: Please do not be frightened to use one. It will not create two babies from the one you have.

Soaker: Yes you will have some of these despite your best diapering attempts!

Wet Bag: Wet bag does not refer to how a new mom feels when she steps out of the shower in those first weeks postpartum.

Changing Pad: In reality, this is a patch of material always too small to protect the changing surface from a baby’s tendency to “spray.”

Inserts: This does not refer to the miscellaneous items you find in your newborn’s pocket diapers when your toddler has gotten hold of them.

Snappi: This definitely does not usually refer to the speed of a new parent’s first diapering attempt.

Pocket: I don’t know about you, but this is a nightmare inducing term. If I ever reached into my “pocket” and found the same contents as in some of my daughters’ diapers, I would run screaming through my backyard!

Thanks for reading! Have a great day!

Raising Green Kids- Greening up your laundry room ~Contest Closed~

This is the first posting in a series I have named Raising green kids. It will be filled with some short tips on how you can make easy choices around your home that will not only save you money in the long run, but also help save the planet.
Just like many of you I've heard the terms "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" a lot over the past 10-15 years. And lets face it we have all heard about global warming, right? Some of you may have even watched Al Gore's documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" from 2006. But has it impacted your life? Have you noticed a change in the weather patterns over the past couple of years?
My brother-in-law Aaron recently went on a trip to Alaska and saw those great icebergs up close. He brought back some great pictures (like this one of waterfalls) of beautiful icebergs, and told stories to his nieces about them. What hit home for me were the stories of the markings with dates that depicted the melting of these icebergs. Were Aaron to return for a repeat trip of hiking through Alaska in a few years, some of those great sites may be gone altogether.
Over the years I have done my part in recycling tins and plastics and composting, even before I had my own home and was making those decisions for myself. But it really wasn't until I had children of my own that the issue really hit home for me- our Earth is changing, and the reality of it is, there are parts of it that wont be here when Gabe (my 7 month old) hits school, and many more that will be gone before he is my age.

So around our house we are doing everything we can to put those 3 R's to good use! Here are a few things we're doing in the laundry room:

Laundry Detergent
First I want you to think back (way back) to grade school science. Some of you may remember learning about soap molecules and why soap works to clean. Well detergent is quite similar. To simplify this think of these little molecules like a magnet- it has a (+) end and a (-) end. One end of the molecule is hydrophobic (repelled by water, but are attracted to oil and grease) while the other end of the same molecule is hydrophilic (attracted to water). Detergents bind to the soil and the mechanical energy or agitation of your washer allows the detergent to pull the oil and dirt away from your clothes. Rinsing washes the detergent and any oil and dirt it has attracted away.

So what's in mainstream laundry detergents that's so bad? Her are some of the more common ingredients you may want to avoid and why:
  • Surfactants. These create the bubbles in your washing machine. Alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs), the most common surfactants in mainstream detergents, have been identified as a potential endocrine disrupter.
  • Synthetic fragrances. These can be found in detergents, fabric softeners and dryer sheets. These are what give you laundry that spring rain, orange blossom or lavender smell. In reality these man-made scented chemicals are made from petroleum, and don’t degrade which makes them extremely toxic to your health and the environment.
  • Phosphates. These are used in detergents to soften water. Phosphates can cause algae blooms in lakes and ponds which lead to the suffocation of aquatic plants and animals.
You might also be surprised to know that mainstream laundry detergents (just like disposable diaper companies) are not required to list all of their ingredients on the label- so really who knows whats in there!

The Greener Option
Greener laundry detergents will contain natural, biodegradable surfactants (some are derived from coconuts, others from corn). The term biodegradable is thrown around a lot these days, but to be truly and completely biodegradable, it must be organic (meaning derived from something living- most often plants) to begin with.
Switch to a greener laundry detergent that is non-toxic, biodegradable with no petroleum based products. We have some great choices for these in North America and many of them are cloth safe! Rockin Green Cloth Diaper and Laundry Detergent can even be used to strip the old detergent residue from your cloth diapers!

Hot vs Cold water:
Warm or hot water melts fats and oils so that it is easier for the detergent to dissolve the soil and pull it away into the rinse water. But 80% of the energy used to wash your clothes is used in heating the water! Washing your laundry in cold water will save energy (and your pocket book). Cold water rinses the soap out just as well as warm or hot, so even if you used a warm or hot wash, use a cold rinse.

What about the dryer?
Of course hanging your laundry is the best for the environment, but that may not always be possible. The many months of winter in our country would definitely make line drying outside more difficult, and believe it or not there are actually some areas with bylaws that dont allow clothes lines in your yard.
So here are a few tips for your dryer:
Keeping your dryer clean can help maximize the air flow and efficiency, so clean the lint filter after every load.
Try to do several loads of laundry at once to take advantage of the leftover heat from the previous load.

Dryer Balls
Dryer balls were invented to reduce static and help your clothing dry faster.
As your wet laundry tumbles in the dryer, Dryer Balls lift and separate your clothes, allowing the air to flow more efficiently. Perfect for those concerned with conserving energy or those with a busy lifestyle. Unfortunately, dryer balls currently available mainstream are made out of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is one of the most poisonous plastics ever manufactured.
A great green alternative is Wool Dryer Balls! Yes, Wool! Wool balls work in a similar manner to the PVC kind in that they lift and separate your cloths but wool will also soften up your clothes by gentle friction of the felted wool fibers against your clothing fibers. Not only does this make your clothes soft and fluffy, it can also reduce your drying time by up to 40% (this will vary according to your load and dryer size and how many balls are in the dryer)! No more need for fabric softener or dryer sheets... and they never need to be replaced! Of course if you enjoy the scent of those dryer sheets, you just need to add a drop of essential oils to one of your dryer balls and it will keep your laundry scented for quite a few loads!

We know shipping is expensive, so why not come on out and buy your Rockin Green and Wool Dryer Balls in person at the upcoming Thanksgiving Mom 2 Mom sale! Saturday October 9th you can see us in person and check out a lot of our great stock from 9am-1pm at 1305 Williams Pkwy, Brampton, On. Find more details on our locals corner page!

Cloth Diaper Wipes and Wipe Solutions- The Perfect Combination- Giveaway Closed

This is our second post in our cloth wipes series. The first post detailed 4 reasons why you should make the switch to cloth diaper wipes and ditch the disposables.

There are two types of cloth wipe solutions: liquid and cube form.

Liquid solutions come in either concentrated or diluted forms and can be used in foaming or spray bottles. Diluted forms can be purchased ready to use. No muss, no fuss.
When purchasing liquid solutions you run the risk of the product leaking during shipping (if you are purchasing online), and they are also heavier to ship. Also without the addition of preservatives (which we don't want added!) these liquid solutions do not have a very long shelf life. Some great brands you can check out for liquid solutions: bumGenius Bottom Cleaner, Northern Essence Natural Wipe Concentrate, and Happy Heiny's.

At our family of shops we carry 2 varieties of cube brands for our customers. Monkey Doodlez and Knickernappies.
Monkey Doodlez SLS Free Wipe Cubes are made in Ontario. They contain lavender and tea tree oil to aid at keeping bacteria and fungus away, aloe vera for their tender bums and are vegetable based, so also safe for vegans.

Knickernappies Baby Bum Drops are made with organic calendula blossoms and aloe vera to help soothe the skin and clear skin irritations. A natural glycerin soap base creates a mild cleansing action, and pure essential oils of lavender and mandarin help to create an aromatic calming atmosphere. Also contains anti-bacterial tea tree essential oil to keep your baby wipes fresh and germ-free.

To use them you simply add 2 cups of hot water (we use boiling water, but you need to plan ahead with this as it needs to cool before you can use it) and stir while the cube dissolves. We mix our batches in a Mason Jar and make a litre at a time. Once you have mixed your solution it is good for a week. We pile our wipes high in an old disposable wipes container and pour the solution over the top of them, so they are ready to use when it is "bum change" time. For outings we like to take dry wipes and put the solution in an old pericare bottle (most hospitals give you one free when you deliver), you can wet wipes as needed and having that extra solution is great for cleaning up sticky messes too!

There are advantages and disadvantages to each form of wipe solution, however once they are prepared, both are in liquid form and they will work in the same manner. To use the solutions, simply add to an old peri bottle, a spritzing or foaming bottle, or directly to your wipes in an old margarine tub, disposable wipes container or wipes warmer. Although some would spray baby, we recommend spraying or wetting your wipes and then using them on baby.
Enjoy the relaxing fragrances from these great wipes solutions.

NUTS ABOUT SOAPNUTS- Giveaway Closed

There are so many options out there for laundry now and days. But there is one choice that has been around for centuries long before being “green” was the “in” thing. Soap nuts! They were commonly used in China, India (where they are grown), as well as other parts of Europe. However it is only recently the west has found how great soap nuts are.

Soap nuts are not really a nut at all but a dried fruit of the Ritha (also known as Soap nut berry) plant or . Farmers collect the fruit on the ground and they are then dried. They are paid fair wages for their nuts, helping the sometime lower income farmers. They contain a natural soap called saponin; this is what makes the nut so amazing.

Unlike many other detergents on the market soap nuts are 100% derived from vegetables, yet are still able to provide deep cleaning abilities. These deep cleaning abilities are not compromised with being gentle on fabrics.
Soap nuts are wonderful for washing delicate fibres with. They are also gentle on those who use them being non-allergenic and hypoallergenic.
Great for those who have sensitive skin, eczema and children’s laundry.

What makes them great for cloth diapers is that they are able to leave no residue while cleaning your diapers. They also able remove any residue from previous detergents. People are often alarmed how many suds are in the washer when they first switch over to soap nuts. This is not because soap nuts are high sudsing, it is because they are stripping out the old residue that the previous detergent had left behind.

Using soap nuts on your diapers is easy. If you are doing a hot wash (which I think everyone should do when they wash cloth diapers), its as easy as putting a few nuts in a muslin bag (which the nuts come with) and tying it.
No need to remove the bag during the (cold) rinse. The natural soap is only released in warm or hot water. You can use soap nuts in a regular cold wash cycles by making a liquid. I don’t believe there is an exact science to this but I simply take a handful of nuts and simmer them in a saucepan full or water on the stove for about 20 minutes. I then let it cool, drain and put it in a jar (or a laundry detergent container would work well
also.) I use about ½ a cup in my wash cycle. The soap nuts have a very mild vinegar scent but there is no scent to any clothes that have been laundered.

The beauty about using soap nuts is that they are reusable. When the nut is done it becomes soft and gummy feeling. Being an all natural product they are biodegradable and compostable.

Soap nuts have so many wonderful benefits beyond laundry. You can make home made cleaners with the liquid, it can be used for washing your pet, hair or car. The applications are many.

Want to try them? Win a 50 gram sample package. First go to www.morethanclothdiapers.com and tell me what you would like to try from my site and why. This must be done before any of the other entries count.

Additional entries:
-like more than cloth diapers on face book -like Canadian cloth retailers on face book

Cloth Diaper Wipes: 4 great reasons to make the switch

Cloth Diaper Wipes are the Perfect Partner to Cloth Diapers

You'll love using cloth diaper wipes for all the reasons you love your cloth diapers! They're softer on your babies skin, chemical free and will save you money! Need more reasons to make the switch to cloth diaper wipes? Keep reading!

Cloth Diaper Wipes are Softer on your babies skin!

Cloth diaper wipes are made out of soft flannel, fuzzy velour, luxurious sherpa and looped terry.

Cloth diaper wipes pamper your child's tender skin. Disposable wipes can be rough, and are made from plastic pellets and chemicals!

Cloth diaper wipes are also perfect for cleaning up those messy faces, runny noses and sticky fingers! Nothing is too messy for cloth diaper wipes to clean up!

Cloth diaper wipes come in several sizes: 5X7's are the perfect fit for your wipes warmer or recycled disposables box. The larger 8X8 size just needs to be folded in half to fit, but handles bigger messes! Just fill your old disposables box, wipes warmer or even an old margarine container with wipes and add some water or wipes solution, and you're ready to go!

Cloth Diaper Wipes are Easy to use

It is easier to use cloth diaper wipes with cloth diapers than to use disposable wipes. Simply wet your cloth wipe with plain water or cloth wipe solution for a comfortable, effective way to clean up. What do you do with them after they are soiled? Just toss them into the diaper pail with the dirty diaper. No more sorting through that dirty diaper to throw disposable wipes in the garbage! Wash your cloth wipes with your cloth diapers. Cloth diaper wipes will fit in your recycled disposable wipe container, recycled margarine container, or even Tupperware. Cant find a container? No problem! You can also wet your wipes as you need them.

Cloth Diaper Wipes Save you Money

Not only are cloth diaper wipes soft and easy to use, you'll save money by switching from disposable to cloth! When you throw away disposable wipes, you're throwing away your money. Many

families spend over $100.00/month on disposables and wipes! Many disposable wipes are so thin that you need to use two or three at a time - more money being thrown away. Cloth diaper wipes are washed and reused to save money, and will usually last through more than one child. Thick enough to handle the messiest of cloth diaper changes, cloth diaper wipes remain soft wash after wash.

Cloth Diaper Wipes are Chemical Free

Cloth diaper wipes are better for your child's delicate skin than disposable wipes! Cloth diaper wipes are made from natural hemp, cotton and bamboo, and only have the ingredients you add to them. Disposable wipes contain chemical ingredients such as preservatives, surfactants, artificial fragrance and parabens. And those cloth like fibres are actually melted plastic pellets! To learn more about the chemicals that go into them and how disposable wipes are made check out e-notes.

A note about home made wipes solutions and recipes:

You need to use caution when home made wipes solutions call for commercial products (like baby wash or shampoo). Shampoo and Baby Wash manufacturers are not required to list every ingredient contained in their product(s). Unfortunately, many commercial products do leave out the fact that their shampoo or baby wash contains phthalates (as surfactants). Which have the potential to cause reproductive problems/cancers and can be quite toxic. It is highly recommended that you check the ingredients list on any product you intend to use on your little ones delicate skin and research those ingredients.

Stay tuned to our next entry on wipe solutions to buy and home made recipes!
